“Don’t wait for your feelings to change to take action. Take action and your feelings will change.” ~Barbara Baron
In 2019, I decided I was going to start jogging at 6 am every day.
I’ve been seeing close friends and family members on their WhatsApp status, put up pictures at the gym, or showing steps counts and calories burnt
I thought to myself “I’ve always been athletic, I can surely start running for 20 mins every morning… and average at least 7000 steps”
The first day was hell… I was so out of shape, I took a couple of breaks for a route I’ve seen ladies jog through none stop
My step count? Too little to talk about.
But each day, I got better and better – My endurance increased and so did the distance I was covering. I quickly went from “maybe I can run for 20 mins every day” to “ I’m the someone who runs for 30 minutes daily”
That’s the thing about taking an action. You don’t know that you can do it until you do it. And then you become someone who does it. This is how you grow into a new life. How many times have you stopped yourself from doing something just because it wasn’t the “right” time
Maybe you’re waiting for the start of a new week, a new month, You want to be more prepared, have every fact available, be more secure, confident, rich, (insert every excuse you’ve used in the past) before you get started
Then a couple of years pass and you’re still “thinking” how cool it would have been if you had started years ago Sounds like something that has happened to you before? Or maybe you felt this sense of urgency to step out of your comfort zone, take control of your life, live out loud, and be your best self but you aren’t sure what your purpose is or if you’d fumble and be laughed at.
So you stop yourself because of the feelings you might confront(or people you might offend)
It is much easier to move forward with a plan of action when it is something you have done before and are used to. You don’t feel “awkward” and won’t think you’re making a “fool” out of yourself. It just seems “right.”
But that only occurs in your comfort zone
For every other “new” you want from life, You’re bound to make a fool of yourself while you learn
You’d have times when there’s never any guarantee that what you want to do would work. The only way to find out is by doing
You gain confidence by doing things you don’t feel confident enough to do
You gain knowledge by jumping into the unknown and being uncomfortable while you learn and understand the new concepts you can only become by doing
“There is always something in us that knows and knows that it knows. We have an inner compass that knows the way. The only way to get feedback from this knowing is through being engaged. Not in our head. Not in our mind. Not in theory but in action. In real-time.” – Sonya Derian
It’s like those mission games you play(if you’re a gamer that is) where the closer you get to your next obstacle, the theme music changes to something more upbeat to show you’re on course. In more realistic video games, Your game controller might vibrate
That’s just feedback to tell you you’re heading in the right direction. But you won’t get any feedback until you actually start moving
Your inner compass does the same thing if you pay attention. It’ll always give you feedback on what you need to know or do differently, even what you need to do next—But this only works when you get out of your head(thoughts) and get started(action)
Whatever you want, starts with leaving your comfort zone. You’re not one small person waiting to create something big. You’re a powerful person wanting to create something small. Face new challenges and opportunities in your life with this mindset
The human mind is powerful once it’s allowed to act, but just like the energy vortex that exists behind an outlet, that power is useless until you plug it in by being engaged. So here’s to taking action and plugging it in.
Do that thing you’ve been putting off now. Don’t wait for your feelings to change before you take the action. Take the action and you’d be amazed at how your feelings change.
And remember: you’re not doing this for the result, although there will be a result.
You are doing this because you are the creator in your life and you’ve decided that now is a good time to START.
